Vatuvara Private Islands - Fiji
The islands are idyllically hidden as far off the beaten track as one can imagine. Rising out of the cobalt blue waters of the South Pacific, this breath taking destination is located in Fiji’s pristine northern Lau waters on Kaibu Island and offers a secluded, unspoilt paradise for the discerning traveller.
Guests are met off of their International flight by an island’s airport representative and escorted through passport control and luggage collection to the domestic terminal. A short wait in the lounge area and you are whisked away to the resorts twin engine Otter aircraft - one huge advantage of this aircraft type is that there is no luggage allowance. The flight takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes flying over a number of beautiful islands and lagoons. Landing on the islands immaculate runway you are met by singing staff, cold towels, chilled water and the management team.
Rob and Lynda Miller must be the most experienced Island Resort Management Team in the world having run the world famous Wakaya Club for some 28 years. That resort is now closed and they joined Vatuvara (owned by Jim Jannard of Oakley. Inc. fame) when Kaibu island was just an uninhabited island.
There are now 4 fabulous residences, surrounded by lush gardens, sundecks and all with their own bionised heated pools, outdoor showers, outdoor entertaining areas and dedicated villa spa. The villas celebrate an excellent mix of western architecture and Fijian style which makes them unique in this luxury market. Each one bedroom villa has a bathroom, kitchen area, dining and sitting room area with complimentary Wi-Fi, satellite TV and the villas are fully air-conditioned.
A short walk or golf buggy drive away is ‘Jim’s Bar’ where breakfast and lunch is served. This haven of peace and quiet is tucked away overlooking a white sandy beach, swaying palm trees out to the reef and blue lagoon. Dinner is served in the ‘Valhalla Restaurant and Bar’ which is perched on a small cliff overlooking the crystal clear blue lagoon, reef and Vatuvara Island. Pacific Rim cuisine is served using all of the fresh ingredients grown on the property. Meats, vegetables, fruits and seafood? The third island in the group is an organic certified living farm where live stock are bred and crops are grown organically allmanaged by the farm manager. Planting is done using the Old Famers Almanac or ‘Gardening by the Moon’. Just as the moon pulls the tides in the oceans, it also pulls upon the subtle bodies of water, causing water to rise in the earth, which encourages the best and healthiest growth. This ensures that guests receive delicious food that nourishes the body, soul and mind.
There are a range of land and sea activities to enjoy whilst staying at the resort. Play on the 4 – hole golf course with its newly installed putting green, miniature club house and facilities. Hiking, walking, diving, snorkelling, kayaking, sailing, jet ski, paddle boarding, swimming and taking a picnic out to Vatuvara Island to see the protected Coconut Crabs or a visit to the Farm Island to see sustainable farming at first hand. Of course if you only want to lie in the sun and catch up on the books you haven’t read this is the place to be.
This is not a normal holiday destination. It is a destination with a huge HEART.
Not only is the island nearly self-sufficient in all foods, but with 2 acres of solar panelling and a wind turbine being installed it will shortly be self-sufficient in power as well. The local people who live on the island next door now have running water, working lavatories, a child care/early childhood education centre and a cyclone proof meeting house. They have been given a purpose, jobs and their dignity. Living proof that investment, business, philanthropy and sustainability can work together. This is ecological tourism at its best – a far reaching commitment to the environment and local community.
